Wal Mart Reality....

At Wal Mart today, I had finished my shopping and was waiting for my ride, when I noticed a young woman. She was standing away from the door way holding up DVDs. As people passes she shyly would quietly say "Three Dollars".

She was dressed in powder blue sweats and sneakers, with no jewelry, and was about 30 years old. When I saw her she had just three DVDs. One I could see was Mask, the other two I never caught site of.

One couple leaving finally stopped and after talking with her bought one of the others, and wished her a merry Christmas and went on their way out in the parking lot. Within the next 15 minutes or so she sold Mask and the other.

These were obviously charity purchases. People had not come out looking to buy dated used DVDs, but did sensing the need of the young woman. Almost immediately after the last was sold she walked into the parking lot and stepped into a waiting car where a man had sat waiting.

They left.

About 5 minutes later the couple who had purchased the first DVD returned carrying the DVD. They did not see her, but saw me, and asked if I knew where she had gone to. I explained that she had left just minutes ago.

It was obvious that they were upset by something and I asked them if their DVD was defective. They opened the case and showed me that there were no contents within the case. Obviously upset that their good intentions had been take advantage of, they left, with their empty DVD case.

I wonder why some people find it alright to steal from others. I hate those that use peoples compassion and charity to rip them off.

On the other hand, I have bought used CDs and DVDs over the years. And the one thing I always did was check for scratches or blemishes before paying for them. But I bought them from a retail outlet, where inspecting them was not an insult.

I never heard her say to anyone why she was out there trying to raise the nine dollars. I never heard her claim it was for her kids, or for food, I just heard her say three dollars as she looked lost and wanting.

Truth is I would have never looked inside either. In fact I was thinking about just giving her twenty dollars without taking the DVDs. I am bad at that. OR good at that depending how you see it. But something held me back. Maybe it was the cleanliness of her clothes, hair and shoes. I am not sure why, but I did not.

Two days before the great day and I got to see true human nature. Both sides of it. The side that takes and the side that gives. I am glad that I belong to the latter group.

To the lady in the blue sweats, I know not what your story is. I can only guess or assume, and without much reservation I can say that whatever you are involved is probably sad and desperate. I hope this next year is good for you, one where you regain your dignity and integrity. It really isn't about the three dollars, it is more about using people's trusting nature against themselves.
