At First Glance.....

I am tired - Another day come and gone.

I wait for the sun to set, and in the distance I see a bit of movement, or did I? I quickly grab my camera, and use the telephoto to see if there was in fact some chance that I saw what I thought…

Into view the little nub protrudes - YES it is a small beak!. A nestling Blue Bird struggling to climb the side of his box to see what the outside holds for the first time. I hope against hope that he climbs and then flies for the first time. I have never seen a bird make that transition. I sit quietly. The nub of the beak comes and goes.

And then….

A small face begins to appear. Then it falls from view. I get one shot off but I know it is not good enough for anyone but me.

The box grows still. I wait and wait and nothing. Then when I am just ready to put the camera aside, he comes again. This time his baby talons grip the side of the box and I watch this beautiful young creature see the world for the very first time.

He sits and looks around slowly. Is he going to jump, to fly?

In a nearby tree his father calls gently encouraging him to make the leap. The baby looks around again, comes closer to the hole and looks some more. Suddenly he falls back to the nest and is gone.

It was not his time to fly. Close, but not then, not today, not while I watched.

I am more than thankful for the glance.

All of a sudden a day I had simply endured, became beautiful.
