Awakening to Beauty...

I was asleep. Dreaming of things not remembered when I first heard the sound. Even in my sleep, I knew that I knew that sound - but at first could not recollect exactly what it was. It was soothing and peaceful to me. I struggled to wake up, curious to see what it was.

As I climbed towards consciousness, it continued and I found it calming. Once my eyes were open, I saw the afternoon sun was muted, and realized that it had been forever since I had awoken to rain.

Ordinarily I would simply lay there and enjoy the serenade. But with the drought of the last two years, I wanted to see and feel it. I cannot remember the last time it has rained here. I rushed outside, and the dogs of course wanted no part of it. They sat on the patio and watched as I hobbled around in the yard. Like a child I opened my mouth and savored the coolness of the drops that I caught. I smelled the grass. All around me the birds were bathing and enjoying the break from the hottest summer here on record. It had been far too long.

The few previous rains had been fast and violent affairs. Coming down mean and threatening like a runaway train heading for a bus of angels. This was love, gentle, warm and nourishing. If I lasted forever I would have been happy. Water has always cooled the Aries fires within.

After getting good and soaked I tended to the bird feeders. And the birds came one after the other, wet, feeding, and enjoying the whole event. Birds that ordinarily do not share a feeder were 10 deep on one. Everyone knew it was a moment of celebration. There was peaceful sharing instead of greedy hoarding.

I do not know how long it rained since it started while I was asleep. I do know it rained for 90 minutes after I awoke. It was a blissful change. And the birds and the trees and the grass, and one old man gave thanks.

It has been a good day.
