The Ghoul of Gorton Road...

I have not had a trick or treater for years. I am not much of a Halloweener I guess. Sure I have a bag of candy here. But since the event that happened on the street on Halloween several years ago - no one seems to come on this street to check for treats. In fact Halloween is quieter than most nights.

When I was married my wife was good at answering the door and ooh-ing and ah-ing over kids in make shift costumes or Wal-Mart's finest. She enjoyed it and I enjoyed that she enjoyed it.

It was the year after we divorced in 1997 that the event occurred.

Didi was big and black. But for her size she was as fast as lightning and when she was upset she could be louder than thunder. And Didi is the reason they say that kids warily come down this street at any time after dark, much less at Halloween. She was one that you did not walk up to. She was one that really cared little for anyone that did not share her address. She was not the best of neighbors.

It was raining like all get out that night. But still the kids ventured out to get their treats. And since this was Didi's first year in our little neighborhood, they had no real reason to avoid the house. Sure the house had its lights out, but all lights inside were blaring. Some ignored the signal that she was not participating. Those are the ones that told the tale.

Seems that Didi was in the bushes outside of her house. And when anyone approached there was no way they could see her. All the houses on my street are set back at least 100 feet from the road, and there are few street lights. So even in the best of weather, I cannot see the house across the street from mine at night. All you see is blackness.

If the lightning happened to spark right at the moment before they turned and began to run, all the innocents would see are brown eyes, big pointed ears and long sharp fangs. Some said she was a vampire. Others a werewolf. The rumors all agree thought that she was ungodly.

Those few that were unfortunate enough to make the walk down the long drive to where Didi sat resting were about to greet the beast. All of a sudden out of the darkness with a loud growl Didi would arise. No one could see where she was. But the growl was one of one who is not at all happy that there is someone there. Then they could sense something heading towards them very very fast, and turn and run they did. Some slipped on the wet grass. Others crashed onto the soaked concrete. There was panic and pandemonium. Luckily all made it back to the street alive.

As they continued running off into the night they were surrounded by the noise of Didi vocalizing her discontent at being disturbed. Not only on this night but on any night. And as they ran by others coming up the street, the others too began to run and shriek as only the scared little innocents can. It was a night of terror on the night of terror.

In fact my doorbell was never rung that night, and has not rung since.

Didi died two years later. It was quiet and she lapsed in her sleep during one of the seizures that she had at night.

No one has yet to tell the kids that Didi is gone. No one saw the black tether that had her under control the whole time. And any that wander Gorton Road at night still hear the growl. I hear it at this instant. The tale is passed down. No one is really sure exactly what she looked like. They never got close enough to get a good look.

But you shall……

If you are brave enough…

Exit here if you choose to skip the picture of the legend maker…..
