By DAVID CRARY, AP National Writer 2 hours, 43 minutes ago Can you believe someone - well in all probability you and I - paid for this study to be done. Why in the world do we need a study to tell us what we already know? What is to be gained from this, especially it admits that it has been this way for decades.. Child's toes gnawed by pit bull puppy By John Andrew Prime A local child is in the hospital, her parents are in custody and a dog is in the pound after the puppy gnawed four of the infant's toes off Sunday, Bossier City police say. The unidentified month-old girl was taken to WK Bossier Health Center by her parents with injuries that promoted staff there to call the police, city spokesman Mark Natale said. "She had a severe injury to one foot, with most of the toes missing," Natale said. "Patrol officers who responded notified detectives, and after our juvenile detectives unit looked into it, they determined the child, who had been sleeping in a baby carrier next to her parents, had been bitten by the family's pit bull puppy, who appears to have gnawed on the child's foot." Natale said the family had brought a mattress into the living room to watch television, and had fallen asleep. The incident was reported to police around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, and that afternoon the child underwent surgery at Sutton's Children's Hospital, Natale said. He said the girl will survive but her foot was maimed, and the child is now in the custody of state social workers. The pit bull puppy has not been destroyed but is in a 10-day quarantine, since it was too young to have had rabies shots, Natale said. The child's parents were arrested on state misdemeanor charges of child desertion, Natale said. He identified the parents as Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, both of 700 block of Anthony Street. Early today, they were transferred to the Bossier Parish Maximum Security facility in north Bossier Parish, Natale said. That criminal offense, Louisiana Revised Statute 14:93.2.1, says "Child desertion is the intentional or criminally negligent exposure of a child under the age of 10 years, by a person who has the care, custody, or control of the child, to a hazard or danger against which the child cannot reasonably be expected to protect himself, or the desertion or abandonment of such child, knowing or having reason to believe that the child could be exposed to such hazard or danger." If convicted, the parents face only a fine of up to $500 and up to six months in prison. Now let me get this correct. An 8 week old puppy chewed off a babies toes, while the parents slept on the floor in the next room. They said that they were watching a movie and dosed off. Er dozed off… They look like a couple of meth heads in their booking shots. They then said that the minute they heard the baby scream they reacted. So the puppy ate three toes before the baby screamed? I think not… Now there was also a ferret there as well. The investigation is proceeding. I cannot believe that the instant that baby was bitten that she was not screaming her head off. Something is not right with this whole thing…. And finally… IMHO if you take life threatening risks, the government, meaning me and you should not have to pay for your rescue. NASCAR one of the most dangerous sports has a field hospital at the races, with helicopters and ambulances on standby. They pay the freight for all of that. So if we are gonna pay to try to find climbers on MT. Hood or wherever, why do we not pay for rescue of NASCAR drivers in an accident? Or a football player that gets hurt? Whats the difference? Except one of the groups is taking responsibility for their own safety and well being and paying for it! You wanna jump out of a plane, fine. Do it.. But if you go splat when your chute doesn't open have your family go and clean the wet spot up. Sheesh how did I get in this mood?
